Structuring Your Website
The actual code structure of the website can make a big difference to the search results. Using quality title tags, headers and image alt tags can provide the search engines with quality information about the page’s content and boost your ranks accordingly. Remember that google doesn’t understand images as it only sees code, so alt tags are a simple way of describing an image, in the same way that screen readers would describe the image to a user with visual impairments.
The structure of the urls can also play a part in the success of SEO. Some complicated sites may incur links like http://www.mysite.com/shop/page/index.php?cat=books&type=fantasy&author=1234
This is not only hard for users to remember / share with friends but hard for the search engines to read. Using simple htaccess techniques, you can shorten the url to something more like:
http://www.mysite.com/books/fantasy/jkrowling/
Not only does this look easier but it allows you to get the keywords from the page into the url. Books, fantasy and the author JK Rowling all get a mention in the url.
